‘Is it a requirement that I deal with local cooperation or social relationships in my Work Plan?"
This is the second item in Gyeonggi Creative Center (GCC)'s call for resident artist application notice. Due to the geographic characteristic of GCC, being located in an island, may residents tend to address the local and spatial context - so much so, that it became the second item in the public notice. Spaces converse with the locations in which our bodies reside, and is completed by holding out its hand to the surrounding environment. The overarching topic of the exhibition "Human Habitat" is this "space." What is space? Why does it so thoroughly permeate their creative activities? The five GCC residents who are participating in this exhibit interprets and narrates the topic of space. As a biological habitat maintains life and is naturally generated at optimum locations for preserving species, a space is survival itself - one that makes us retain our work and constantly question our own selves. Thus, the artists aim to share their multi-layered signifiers and memories under the umbrella of "space" in the "Human Habitat" exhibit, and present a habitat where boundaries and new perspectives may cross over one another and settle down. ■ Gyeonggi Creation Center
As my work progressed, I became fascinated with structures, especially ones located at the outskirts of cities. By structure, I mean ones in which the owner (or an unformal artist)'s informal intention has interfered in the process of constructing or renovating a house based on a structure that is neither modern nor traditional. Discordant materials and colors come together, and as a spectator, I am fascinated by its intention, form and colors, combining them into photographs or sound. ■ Rhee Ji Young
This piece records urban road sides to seashores. The road sign, which had pointed to a fixed location at a fixed location, becomes the symbol of the individual floating about in the society in this work, while serving as a metaphor of the conflict between individual value systems and the society or its norms, and the uncertainty of life as a journey. ■ Lee Chang Hoon
My work is equivalent to the things I should separate from my own self in order to become a better person who can be seen as a social standard, as well as things I want to differentiate from myself by ignoring and excluding them. Also, it is the reality of another, which is no longer mine. However, even sceneries I left behind may be the very womb that had protected and raised me. The landscape, transparent and in suspension, is a floating scenery that refuses to vanish, and stays as a taxidermied piece of the society, or people who have been abandoned due to yearnings to reach a better place. ■ Cho hye jin
